JEFFERSON MANGUM
In late 2002, when Jeff briefly held a slot as a DJ at WFMU, a free-form public
radio station in the New York / New Jersey area, he was officially
referred to as Jefferson Mangum, at least on the station's website.
I'm guessing this was a half-hearted attempt at anonymity. On the air, he
referred to himself simply as "Jeff," as did the other DJs at the station.
As far as I can tell, not once did he nor anyone else give any mention to
Neutral Milk Hotel or even a hint of his past accomplishments. He didn't
even give himself credit for the original sound collages he played. Online
indie news website Pitchfork broke the news about Jeff's DJing gig just
three weeks into his tenure, so the secret didn't stay under wraps for
long. In all, Jeff spent just over two months at the station.
