MP3 of the Moment
Neutral Milk Hotel live May 1st, 1997 at the Lounge Ax in Chicago, IL
Here's a nice live show. A few options for downloading it
here.
MP3 of the Moment
October 13, 1998 Peter Curran Show, GLR, London, England
1. interview with Jeff Mangum
2. Naomi (acoustic)
3. interview (contest for listeners)
4. mention of the live show (recorded later)
I posted this a couple years ago, but I've since gotten a
better version which doesn't have the annoying skipping in "Naomi" like
the old version. Plus this recording has a little "live review" tacked on
the end.

WHAT'S NEW:
Added info on some rare demo tapes to the discography (misc
/ other page) [more unavailable stuff to pine for]. Some
news briefs. A few new
entries to the song index.
Updated shop page with a new DVD
available (4/12/98 SF).

WHAT'S NEW:
Nothing too interesting to mention.. just minor updates here and there.
MP3 of the Moment
Elf Power live with Jeff Mangum "The Arrow Flies Close" (4-28-01 London).
This is really nice.. very rare recording and a rare post-NMH appearance
of Jeff singing. You might've heard the album version of this song where
Jeff sings backing vocals for just a couple seconds (if
not, try
here).. well, on this live version he sings more and gets into
it.
Bonus download: The Music Tapes
(Julian Koster's band) live video + mp3s.
MP3 of the Moment
Thanks to Andrew and Stormx, an incredible rarely-seen NMH performance has
been made available for everybody. It's a video of 10/31/97 at a Halloween
party in Athens, GA. It's a 220MB avi file and can be downloaded here:

MP3 of the Moment
Neutral Milk Hotel - 1998-04-24 400 Bar, Minneapolis, MN (87mb zip at
rapidshare)
Here's another pretty good Neutral Milk Hotel show that hasn't circulated
online much yet. Technical difficulties and "brain melting" by band
members plague some of the first few tracks. "Naomi", in particular, is a
train wreck. But nice show overall. Jeff throws in a quick rendition of
"All The Colors of the Rainbow" in the middle of "Rubby Bulbs" before
eventually transitioning into an epic version of "Snow Song Part 1".

WHAT'S NEW:
Corrected '98 radio session info in the bootography
and
gigography. ("XFM 8/18/98" is actually from May
1998. And "Capitol Radio session '98" is actually 10/13/98 GLR.) Another 2005 drawing added to the
art gallery. Added "She Did a Lot of Acid" to
song index. Some additions to the cover list in the
FAQ. Some 7" scans added to discog.
MP3 of the Moment
Neutral Milk Hotel - 4/23/97 Tokyo Rose, Charlottesville, VA (72mb zip
at rapidshare)
Here's a NMH recording that hasn't made the rounds much yet. First show of
the '97 US tour. Intimate performance with some rarely played songs,
including "April 8th" and "Bucket". Technical problems with the PA cutting
out affect some of the first few songs. Some tape hiss on the recording.

WHAT'S NEW:
Lots of minor updates... Some items in the news.
Forthcoming A Hawk and A Hacksaw album added to
discography. Fun-O-Mat quote added to NMH
entry in Musical Adventures. Info for a
UK '98 recording added to bootography.
Gigography. Another 2005 drawing added to the
art gallery. Added "Jennifer" to
song index.
MP3 of the Moment
Neutral Milk Hotel - Jennifer (Shannon's Monroe House Demos)
Perhaps you've heard the song "I Bring Jennifer" from the Unreleased Demo
#2? That track is also on Shannon's Monroe House Demos, but in slightly
better quality (turns out the title is actually just "Jennifer"). The fate
of the unreleased demos is still in limbo as Shannon waits for Jeff to
give a verdict as to whether it's ok to share them or not.

WHAT'S NEW:
Want something, umm, different to listen to?
The Giant Egg Leaks Over The Masses: Fanfare Vol. 4 may be just what
you need. It's the long-awaited new Neutral Milk Hotel album... or so it
claims.
Added "Engine" info to song index. Yeah, I've been
really slow to finish that section, but I'll try to add more songs soon.
MP3 of the Moment
The Instruments (with Jeff Mangum) - When The Stars Shine (live 2003?)
Jeff performed with The Instruments recently. It probably sounded
something like this. This mp3 popped up online a year or so ago
(mislabeled as an unreleased NMH song). The quality isn't very good (it
skips badly) and the date/location is unknown.

WHAT'S NEW:
Minor updates to the
Musical Adventures of Jeff Mangum and discography.
Thanks to everybody who's ordered a copy of the new DVD to benefit the site: Neutral Milk Hotel - In The Electric
Lounge
Just $7 shipped.
MP3 of the Moment
Here's something for people who love the album In The Aeroplane Over
The Sea and have listened to it countless times. It's basically a
chance to listen to the album in a "new" way. For those who believe in
magic, the mix was made by happy pixies in a sunny lagoon in the enchanted
land of smiles. For the less whimsically inclined, it's just an effect
made with an audio editing program. But still, I think it's kinda neat.
Neutral Milk Hotel - In The Aeroplane Over The Sea (Secret Mix)
The King of Carrot Flowers pt.1 (vocal)
The King of Carrot Flowers pts.2 and 3 (instrumental)

Announcing a new DVD offer to benefit the site:
Neutral Milk Hotel - In The Electric
Lounge
Just $7 shipped.
Some briefs added to the news.
MP3 of the Moment
Here's that Rilo Kiley live cover of "In The Aeroplane Over The Sea". I
already offered it for download a year or so ago, but here it is again for
those who missed it. Be warned, the sound quality is poor, but I think
they do a decent job with the song.

WHAT'S NEW:
Finally got scans of the elusive "Champagne Dancing Party"
compilation 7" (thanks to Sean). A
few more pictures have been added to the Jeff Mangum Art Gallery
(specifically more recent drawings). Oh,
and unrelated, but check out my semi-new pseudo mp3 blog,
defgav.com. Thanks.

WHAT'S NEW:
Info on several shows added to the bootography. A
few pictures have been added to the Jeff Mangum Art Gallery
(specifically Bell Museum
shirts). Also, good news: I recently acquired some additional
webspace, so expect more mp3s (and maybe some videos) in the future.
And check out the new FAQ if you haven't already.

WHAT'S NEW:
The Carrot Flower Kingdom has gotten a lot of nice second-hand hype lately
thanks to Shannon's demos (plugs at pitchfork, tiny mix tapes, and several
popular blogs). And the shout-out in Kim Cooper's great new NMH book was
pretty cool, too.
Check out the new FAQ. (sorry, still no word on the
fate of the rest of the demos.)
MP3 of the Moment
Exciting news! A new old batch of NMH demos just surfaced, called
Shannon's Monroe House demos. Stay
tuned for more, and check
Shannon's blog entry. But here's
"Arms So Real"
- This song recently came to light thanks to an unearthed live version.

WHAT'S NEW:
There's now a page up for "Fanfare 2" (vol. 2
of the tribute project featuring fans covering NMH songs). Also, minor
discography updates (vinyl reissues). And I'm currently working on a FAQ
which should be ready soon. Don't forget to check the
news.. the Aeroplane book should be out very soon, and is sure
to be insightful.

MP3 of the Moment
Jeff Mangum radio appearance from 1998, apparently broadcast on Capital
FM, which is an independent radio station in London. (if anyone can clue me in to the
exact date, please email me). Features a short interview plus a solo
acoustic performance of "Naomi". Recording quality is pretty good, but
some popping in the middle of the song.
Regular-click here for a zip of all 3 parts at RapidShare.

WHAT'S NEW:
The Jeff Mangum Art Gallery now has a section for
his recent drawings. Check the news for more info
about them. By the way, if you frequent a message board or someplace with
a contingent of NMH fans, please consider mentioning neutralmilkhotel.org
to them. It's just that the old
URL will die anyday now, and I need help getting the word out about
the new location. Thanks if you can!

WHAT'S NEW:
The Carrot Flower Kingdom can now be reached at the quaint internet location neutralmilkhotel.org. Much easier to remember name! I
also did lots of updates.. nothing major, just little additions/fixes here
are there. With more to come in the next few days. So take a look around and enjoy!

WHAT'S NEW:
As we all know, Hurricane Katrina has devastated New Orleans and other
places in the region. Jeff Mangum's hometown of neighboring Ruston,
Louisiana apparently wasn't hit hard, but that entire area is still
reeling and could really use any help they can get. Check out the current
MP3 of the Moment
below.
MP3 of the Moment
Full show of Neutral Milk Hotel live in New Orleans in 1998. It was the
first time Jeff had performed a high profile gig in the "big city" of his
youth. Aeroplane was just taking off, and Jeff had family members
in the audience, giving a triumphant feeling to the show. Recording
quality is decent, but not without problems.

WHAT'S NEW:
Strangely enough, there's quite a bit of activity in the world of NMH right
now.. with a book due out and several reissues on the way... check out
Neutral Milk Hotel News for
more. By the way, musicians, the deadline for the tribute project "Fanfare 2" is
fast approaching. Visit the message board thread on the e6 townhall forums
here.
MP3 of the Moment
"Over The Waves" Wonderful track by the band Tall Dwarfs, featuring Jeff
Mangum on backing vocals. It's off their 2003 album
The Sky Above, The Mud Below. Jeff co-wrote the song and also
plays acoustic guitar on it. Chris Knox, who NMH fans might be familar
with from the New Zealand 2001 show, is
in the band.

If you're into hearing fans cover NMH songs, check out the
Fanfare project. I've been trying to update
Neutral Milk Hotel News occasionally.
Also, made a wee bit more progress on the song index.
Minor updates to gigog/bootog. I'd like to start adding show reviews, so
if you've ever seen NMH live, please help me out and submit one!
MP3 of the Moment
Recently, a new NMH boot surfaced: Seattle 7/6/96, which would make it the
earliest full-band live recording out there. There are some sound
problems, but a highlight of the show is "Through My Tears", which after
performing, Jeff reveals the actual title to be "Message Sent". So it
seems all this time fans have been calling it by a mislabeled name. Oh
well!
NeutralMilkHotel-ThroughMyTears(1996-07-06Seattle).mp3 (sorry, mp3 is gone
now.)

By popular demand: a "news" section! Sure, "Neutral Milk Hotel news" might
sound oxymoronic, but lo and behold, there it sits:
Neutral Milk Hotel News.
Also, made a wee bit more progress on the song index.
MP3 of the Moment
Call it a cop-out, but the mp3 of the moment is actually a link to
archive.org, a
spiffy website featuring lots of various live shows for free download. Of
particular interest to NMH fans may be the
Glen Phillips shows, several of which feature NMH covers. All told,
Glen does three different NMH songs:
King of Carrot Flowers,
Two-Headed Boy,
Two-Headed Boy Pt 2.
January 28, 2005
New section: Jeff Mangum Art Gallery (featuring some of his illustrations
and other visual works). Added Milk (yes, just "Milk") to discography and
Jeff's musical adventures. Big thanks to everyone who got a When It All
Caved In cd.. it's very much appreciated! If you haven't gotten one
yet, the offer is still good.

Ok, this isn't really a track from NMH, but it's a rare live cover by
Rilo
Kiley of "In The Aeroplane Over The Sea" from 6/28/02 at the Knitting
Factory in Hollywood. The recording quality isn't very good, but still an
interesting take on the song by an up-and-coming band. Thanks to my friend
L for lending a
hand hosting.

Greetings!
Much is new here. The Neutral Milk Hotel Definitive Discography has
morphed into The Carrot Flower Kingdom. Which name is worse? A
matter of personal opinion! Anyways: Lots of various little additions
here and there. Plus most
of all, a couple new sections: The NMH Song Index (under construction) and
the Musical Adventures of Jeff Mangum (which is like a timeline/bio of his
projects).
